Hydroponics; derived from the greek words ‘Hydro” meaning water and “Ponos” meaning labor. This is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water and not soil. Plants can be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in a medium like sand or perlite. In the 19th century, researchers discovered that plants absorb essential minerals as ions in water. With traditional soil growing techniques, the soil in the pot acts as the fluid reservoir. The minerals in the soil then dissolve when water is introduced, the plants roots then absorb the ions and use them for growth. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant’s water supply artificially, the soil required for the plant to thrive is no longer needed. The plant is now recieveing it nutrients through the water and not the soil, and almost any normal plant will grow with hydroponics. The hydroponics garden grows much faster (a grow cycle is 2 months), cleaner (no dirt), and more productive (since it grows faster you get more plants per year), than the soil garden. Hydroponics does take more attention, but thats part of the enjoyment. Watching the plants grow, thats what its all about.

Solution culture uses only a nutrient rich solution that aids in plant growth, the roots float free in the nutrient solution.
